5 Baking Shortcuts for Busy Families

We at MaryRuth's believe preparing quick and delicious treats should be easy. While it might taste incredible to bake cakes and brownies from scratch, it can also be pretty time-consuming.

In fact, MaryRuth felt the burden of this herself! She used to adore whipping up all sorts of baked goods from scratch, but after her twins were born, she became much busier and leaned into utilizing the assistance of baking mixes for things like almond crust pizzas, brownies, cookies, and so much more.

That said, we've put together a fantastic list of our go-to tricks and tools for delicious home baking when you're pressed for time. Check 'em out!

Embrace Pre-Made Mixes

Not all recipes have to be made from scratch! Boxed mixes can be decorated and turned into tasty desserts for holidays and parties without much of a fuss. Substitute melted ghee for olive oil, nut milk for water, or add an extra egg for a more decadent cake. You can even mix in different kinds of chocolate chips or nuts or experiment with garnishes for whatever festive occasion you're celebrating.

Keep a Well-Stocked Pantry

Having baking staples ready in your pantry will set you up for success whenever you're craving something sweet. We recommend keeping pre-made mixes on hand and additional ingredients like maple syrup, monk fruit sweetener, coconut flakes, nuts, sprinkles, cinnamon, and whatever else you like!

Planning time in your week to check expiration dates on your canned and jarred items, condiments, etc., will help ensure that you don't potentially waste food by allowing it to expire. Plus, it can create opportunities for activities with children! For example, if you have a box of blueberry muffin mix and notice it's about to expire, you can plan a time that week to make some muffins with the kiddos. That's a win-win!

Stick With Familiar Recipes

Making recipes you can recall preparing in the past is much easier than trying something new.

Although most bakers may want to branch out with their culinary creativity, recipes they have previously prepared can take some of the work and time out of closely following a new recipe. If you'd like, add sparkle to old standards, such as decorating oatmeal or chocolate chip cookies with colored sprinkles.

Try a Pressure Cooker

A pressure cooker is an amazing solution for baking under pressure! ;) Believe it or not, you don't need an oven to bake a cake, bread, cookies, brownies, or whatever else. You can spread any batter in a prepared pan that will fit in your electric pressure cooker.

The pressure cooker is a reliable kitchen appliance that cooks and bakes in nearly half the time an oven does! It's especially nice in the hot summer months when you don't like to turn your oven on
